Why We Protect Tidewater’s History
The mission of Tidewater Historic Restoration Initiative is to restore and preserve underfunded historical sites throughout the local Tidewater region. We will support this initiative through fundraisers, partnership with local businesses and governments, and community outreach. Our goal is to protect overlooked historical sites to make them more accessible and meaningful to future generations.
How the Initiative Began
The Tidewater Region is filled with history ranging from colonial Jamestown to its role in the Civil War. Tidewater Historical Restoration Initiative was born after observing that the very landmarks defining our regional identity were quietly slipping into ruin, we saw significant sites rich with stories of our ancestors facing an uncertain future without a unified voice to advocate for their survival.
Witnessing this decline firsthand, we wished to bridge the gap between historical significance and modern neglect. We recognized that saving these structures required more than just passion; it demanded a dedicated nonprofit strategy to coordinate major restoration projects and mobilize the fundraising necessary to protect Tidewater’s story.
Today, our focus extends to the strategic management of site stabilization and regional education. By transforming these restored spaces into accessible learning environments, we ensure that the architectural and cultural heritage of Tidewater remains available for current and future generations to explore and honor.
